Decision time...

What's this? An actual real update? Well, yes and no...

As you can see it's been quite some time since the blog was last updated, and the reason is that there has been no work done on the mod for the last 5 weeks. There are several reasons for this; primarily the fact that having a new baby doesn't leave much time for modding (or anything else for that matter!). I really hadn't anticipated what a demanding baby Ben could be!

However, there have also been other distractions (such as the first expansion pack for The Lord of the Rings Online; Mine of Moria). The recent arrival of Storm of Zehir for NWN2 has brought a lot of changes, and the thought of checking that my mod still works with it and then updating it to take advantage of all the new features does not really get my juices flowing. In fact, I'm not intending to buy SoZ at all.

So, all this leaves me with some decisions to make (or I should say "us" rather, as my wife has a lot at stake with the mod too). The options I can see moving forwards are as follows:

  • Continue with developing the mod. Honestly, I cannot see any work being done on it for the forseeable future, so this would be a very long term aim, and I would be surprised to see it released before 2010.
  • Stop development and submit the build as a prefab to the community. The state of the mod right now means I could submit an entire city, either with or without ambient life, to the community to use as they see fit. There would be no story (I would remove the story elements before doing this). This would probably mean an end to development of the mod however.
  • Pass the mod on to another developer who wishes to continue it's development. I would still be available to help with story, but probably not with any major building. This of course requires someone to be interested in taking on a large project which is probably only 40% complete.

So, those are the options and we now have to decide what to do. Any thoughts and comments would be gratefully received. It would be a shame to let all the hard work go to waste!

Once we've reached a decision I'll obviously let the community know.

Hey there,

Personally, I would vouch for continuing to develop this mod - The ideas you guys have look promising and I'd like to play it one day, even if it's 10 years from now..

Maybe it's just a matter of shifting to a lower gear.. There's no real rush to finish it, and the real reward is more in the building of the module, less in the completion of it.

I've been at my module for several years now - from nwn1 days.. moved over to nwn2... and probably only get done in nwn4 or something.. but completing it is a dream i slowly work at and enjoy thinking about.

Anyway, just my 2c :)

Cheers,

That's a shame to hear. I can understand how a baby (especially when it's your first one, and in the earlier days) can dominate all your time and energy.

I agree in large part with CmdrDats. If building the mod is still an enjoyable prospect in and of itself, go with #1, and maybe it will be ready one day, whenever that is. If you don't, then you have to do #2. Don't destroy or let any of your hard work go to waste. I wouldn't count too much on #3, but you can give it a shot, but I'd be surprised if you had any serious takers.

And if you don't go for #1, but still want to keep involved in the building community, there are a bunch of projects out there I'm sure who would like nothing more than to count on the occasional contribution of someone as talented as you are.

Good luck in your decision making!

I vote to continue. I would hate to see all that great work not reach completion. Short of that, I would say publish as a prefab. However, as others have stated - no rush - from what we have seen so far, it would be well worth the wait, and may even get here before Mysteries of Westgate!

I too advice you to continue. This project is really promising, it would be a shame for it to go waste. And there's nothing wrong with the delay. Even in 2011 there would be many people who would enjoy your module.

But as the others said, what matters is whether you really want to do this, because you just enjoy it.

Another vote to stick it out. I went through a pretty hectic time with work (no baby, but can imagine you're swamped!) from last summer until just before Christmas, and i though that was it with modding for me. But I've gradually been getting the time, and more importantly enthusiasm, to be working on the toolset again. So I'd vote for stick it out. Enjoy the time away from the toolset and with the baby. THen see how things go. If you find yourself back at the toolset in a few months time, this project will be there to carry on. plus it's something i was looking forward to!

Thanks for the encouragement. I'll leave it another month or two before deciding.

Congrats to having your first baby! :D Awesome news!

When it comes to the mod I also think you should continue with it as long as you think it is fun. It doesn't really matter if it takes time as long as you think it's fun and you don't feel it's too much.

Remember, you're developing this foremost for YOURSELF so your own interest has to come first. We players are just glad if you decide to share that work with us. ;)

By the way, I've added your blog to my own blog-list so if you could do the same for me, that'd be awesome! :)

Good luck with everything man! :)
